So Liam has been walking around the last few days humming and singing “here comes the sun,” which I think of as one of the all-time great songs.
I say to him, “wow, I love that song; I didn’t know you liked The Beatles.”
He looks at me, horrified. “I don’t. It’s from “Glee,” with Demi Lovato.”
Me, equally horrified, “Demi Lovato? Singing The Beatles?”
Liam, speaking as if to someone who has had a lobotomy, “Not just Demi Lovato. Santana, too. A capella, so you can really hear the lyrics.”
Me, making a last-ditch effort, “But the Beatles version–”
Liam, firmly, “Mom. Demi Lovato is GREAT. And her version is SO MUCH BETTER than the old one.”
I am now a shell of my former self. My brilliant wonderful son—talented in so many ways—disdains The Beatles in favor of Demi Lovato? I know that teens and parents are supposed to disagree with each other’s musical taste, but…Demi Lovato? Where have I gone wrong?
Fasten your seatbelts, people. It’s gonna be a bumpy adolescence.
I don’t mind Demi Lovato, but I’m not going to agree she’s better than the Beatles.

Ahh the joys of having a teenager.

That’s Demi Lovato? I had no idea. I thought that version was quite nice, but it’s not better. I have heard some pretty spectacular versions though…it’s the song that is so perfect. The Beatles are just awesome anyway.

I’m no beetles fan, but at least they showed some emotion when they did this song. This was a total Pop nonsense recording. If this had been on the show where Demi is a judge she would have criticized them for not connecting with song. Better? Worse? File me under “Indifferent”.
Yeah, that’s just straight up sacrilege. I can tolerate a certain amount of “Glee” but it’s karaoke, dammit.
This reminds me of back in the day when Puff Daddy remixed The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” into a farewell rap for the Notorious B.I.G. and then people started talking about how much they loved “that Puffy Daddy song.” NO. Just no.

The first time I heard the Beatles as a version of elevator music, I thought I’d faint. I have hardened myself. My granddaughter doesn’t even know who the Beatles. Sometimes, I’m not sure who they were either.

She does have a pleasant voice. But yes. How can you compare it to George Harrison? My 10 year old was recently talking about this song Radioactive. I was thinking it was the old Radioactive — then I heard it and it of course wasn’t. But it still is a great song — Here comes the sun. It’s just a testament to the the song itself.

Nothing against Demi, but that’s one you can keep to show him when he gets older. When the hormones settle, he WILL see the errors of his ways.
Oh yes, this little commentary of his will be stored away in the “dude when you’re twenty you’re going to regret it…” file. HA.
She has a nice voice but, eh. The kids these days. They think their hit of the month is better than everything. I do think, though, that knowing her struggles with addiction, I tend to like her more because she was so upfront about them (eventually? it was eventual, right, not immediate?)

Yeah, she’s better than that other one…Selena Gomez? Or who is ICarly? And at least the song is in the contest of a “lesbian” affair (or at least as lesbian as FOX is going to let it) … so it could be worse. Could be Bieber or … I dunno. There’s always worse. That’s the part that scares me! What’s lurking in the future….
This too shall pass?

Isn’t that a Beatles song too, or at least a George Harrison song? : )
