In the midst of last week’s National Day celebration, a group of men find a patch of grass to begin their prayers.
Having no religious faith of my own, I am always impressed and a little mystified by devotion, while I am infuriated by zealotry of all sorts. I wish – devoutly – that the former did not so frequently cross the line into the latter.
Great pictures. Really captures something.
I’ve always said “I wish I was a fan of something. Anything.” So I totally get where you’re coming from. I recently had a random volunteer come and help me on a project. He answered to a Craigslist ad: “Hi, I’m visiting from Saudi Arabia and I’d love to volunteer.” When I got his email, I sat there and froze. I asked my boss if I could have him come in and help. I was totally stumped as to why some guy from SA would want to volunteer for us… And we sat there for 2 hours talking – talking – talking. Did you know that to have a passport from SA you must (MUST) be a Muslim?

I was beyond stumped. Sometimes I wish I was devoted to anything other than making sure I always have JIF peanut butter in my cabinet and clean underwear in my drawers.

JIF and underwear seems just about right. Glad you talked with the guy from SA – what kind of volunteering was he doing for your project? That’s very cool. Saudi is really different from here, though (and I’m glad) – the Gulf states are generally much more relaxed about things…
