Abu Dhabi is full of expats. Some expats drive Maseratis and live in palatial villas.
Others, like this man, work at grocery stores and are identified by terms straight out of the Imperialist’s Handbook:

How big is the expat community…. or is that a silly question? 🙂

Hi there – that’s not at all a silly question, but the answer will be surprising, I think. What I’ve read is that the “local” Emirati population (which is to say UAE nationals) is only about 20% of the entire population, and perhaps even less than that amount. It’s a relatively small number – and the expat population comes from, literally, everywhere else: South Asia, Europe, Australia, Canada, the States, Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India. The mix of languages on the street is stunning – and yet almost everyone has at least a little English, so that’s the lingua franca.
Yeah, that’s pretty scary and doesn’t surprise me at the least.
