Shade.
Abu Dhabi city stretches along the Arabian Gulf, so on one side of the Corniche Road is beach and blue water; on the other side are glass-clad towers. The city has expanded the beach recently, and this new stretch of sand has just opened. The man in the chair is a lifeguard. But by about 11AM, when I took this picture, it’s too hot to be at the beach. Even the water is hot.
I love these glimpses. And oh my goodness on the heat of the water. My kids would be crispy in about 30 seconds.

It’s astonishing, especially as someone who grew up with cold lake & oceans, to plunge into what you think is going to be a refreshing dip and…it’s hot. The literal bath-water. Hotels and swim clubs here, in the summer, advertise their swimming pools as “chilled.” Topsy turvy in the extreme!
I love learning about Abu Dhabi. I would have never guessed about the water (I’d probably enjoy it).

Actually the water is pretty delicious, but there is that moment of disconnect because usually diving into the water really feels like slipping into a bath…at least until January or so, when the water finally gets a tad chilly.
